A term is an hour budget with a measurement habit attached — and both halves are knowable before you start.
Start with the arithmetic, because the arithmetic is fixed. A CEFR level is roughly 200 guided hours from zero for A1, and an adult starting from zero should expect about 1,000–1,200 hours to reach C1. At five honest hours a week, one level is around forty weeks; at two hours a week it is two years. Neither is wrong — but only one of them should surprise you.
A workable week divides those hours by skill, not by mood. Input sessions carry listening and reading; 10–20 minutes of daily shadowing carries the listening-to-speaking link; a short writing slot keeps production honest. The exact ratio matters less than the rule that the weakest skill gets the next free hour, not the favourite one.
Review runs on a calendar, not on willpower. The forgetting curve means each review should land as the memory starts to slip, at expanding intervals: day 1, day 3, day 7, day 16 and day 35, then every two to three months. Paper cards, an app or a wall calendar all work; the schedule is the mechanism, the tool is furniture.
On narrow screens, swipe or scroll the plate sideways.
The weekly checkpoint is the term's instrument panel: a 60-second recording and a 200-word written piece, about ten minutes, dated and kept. A course completion percentage tells you that time passed; the checkpoint tells you whether ability moved.
Read the checkpoint monthly, not daily. Over four to eight recordings the trend shows as fewer pauses, longer runs between hesitations and cleaner timing; over four to eight written pieces it shows as faster drafting and fewer stalls. When the trend is flat, adjust the hour budget or the skill split — the files tell you which — rather than renegotiating your self-worth.
Put together, a term is simple to describe: an hour target derived from the level you want, a weekly split that feeds the weakest skill, a review calendar with real dates, and a ten-minute checkpoint every week. Boring infrastructure, visible progress.
